"Or Winning the Championship From Harvard" Tip Top Weekly, No. 242, December 1900 Burt L. Standish (1900) Touted as an ideal publication for American youth, Tip Top Weekly featured the ongoing adventures of Frank Merriwell, first as a student at a fictious New England academy, and later at Yale, where Merriwell excelled in academics and sports. The series, which ran from 1896 until 1916, numbers over eight hundred issues: it chronicles Merriwell's collegiate life on and off the athletic field--his courtships with co-eds, his academic achievements, and the rivalries with the Harvard and Princeton sporting teams. Later stories follow his post-graduate adventures around the world and introduce his younger brother Dick, also a Yale undergraduate, as well as his young son, Frank Jr. Miscellaneous material at the end of each issue includes readers' letters and advertisements. |
